Canine Good Citizen Testing Information    

The CGC Test is offered on a Saturday, every month at Bark Avenue Pet Supply.  The test is given by an AKC certified evaluator.  Registration is required - sign up before Sept 9th at the store. Please contact our staff for more information.              

What is the purpose of the Canine Good Citizen Program?

The purpose of the CGC Program is ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it has been trained to be well behaved in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs.

What is the Canine Good Citizen Test?

The test is noncompetitive and dogs are not required to perform with the same precision required in formal obedience.  To pass the CGC test, your dog must pass all 10 items of the test, which can be found on the American Kennel Club website  www.AKC.org     CGC Testing Information 

Who is invited?

All dogs, including purebreds and mixed breeds are embraced by and welcomed in the Canine Good Citizen program.

Age Requirements for Dogs:

There are no age limits for dogs taking the CGC test.  Dogs are welcome to participate in the CGC tests when they are old enough to have completed all vaccinations. However, the AKC does recommend that if the dog is tested as a puppy, it is important for the owner to have the dog re-tested as an adult.  This is because behavior and temperament can change over time.

Make Leash Walking a Pleasure for You & Your Dog


All dogs should know how to walk nicely on a loose leash, even little ones. Constant pulling on a collar can cause trachea damage in dogs of all sizes, and even a 30lb dog can take his owner for a ride if he pulls.  We’ve all witnessed dogs that pull on leashes and drag their owners. 

•    Are you walking the dog or is he walking you?

•    Is it hard for you to get into the groomers?    Into the vet’s office?  

•    Is your dog bigger than you can handle? Is your dog stronger than you? Does your shoulder ache after a walk?

•    Are you in control when another dog approaches during a walk?

•    Does your small dog cough and choke herself, as she pulls you from tree to tree?

In this mini class, trainer Stacey Larsen will demonstrate many ways to make dog walking a more pleasant experience for you and your dog. Her tips, training techniques and demonstrations will change the way you and you dog go for a walk.

   with a big vocal response?

   Men with beards? Or people in hats?

* Does your dog pee when approached by a stranger?

   when another dog is approaching?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, this class is for you!

Trainer Stacey Larson will help owners understand why their dogs are shy.

Class will practice exercises that will help overcome their shyness!
